Hearts maintained their unbeaten record with a convincing win over Dunfermline at Tynecastle.

Second-half goals from Graham Weir, his first for the club and Dutch striker Mark De Vries settled it.

The victory moved Hearts into second place in the league and gave their fans some comfort after the loss of goalkeeper Antti Niemi to Southampton.

Hearts came close after only 40 seconds when Alan Maybury tried his luck from 30 yards out but goalkeeper Marco Ruitenbeek was alive to the threat and tipped the ball over the top.

Scott Severin then lashed a shot well wide for Hearts as goalmouth incidents were few and far between in the early part of the game.

Jason Dair responded for Dunfermline with a long-range effort which sailed wide of Roddy McKenzie's left-hand post.

Steve Crawford had the first shot on target for the visitors with a low, angled drive which McKenzie dealt with comfortably. Scott Thomson came within inches of the opener in 32 minutes when his close-range header from a Barry Nicholson free-kick drifted narrowly over.

De Vries had an opportunity at the other end shortly afterwards but Thomson made a fine block just as a goal looked certain.

Ruitenbeek then pulled off the save of the half when he leapt to his right to keep out a 20-yard from Severin.

The opening goal came in 53 minutes when Weir headed in a cross from Jean-Lousi Valois.

Four minutes later, Dunfermline lost a similar goal when De Vries headed down a cross from Paul McMullan.

Dunfermline finished strongly with Scott Thomson hitting the post but it was too little too late
