Hearts fans protested outside the ground before the game at the proposed move to Murrayfield, but by full-time they were praising what had happened on the field as they fought back to beat Motherwell 3-2.

Hearts took an early lead on five minutes as Dennis Wyness had the simplest of tasks to tap in a right-wing Paul Hartley cross.

Sixteen minutes later they almost repeated the feat, but this time Wyness mis-hit his effort and Barry-John Corr saved comfortably.

Hearts were creating the better chances on the break despite Motherwell playing some neat build-up football.

With nine minutes to the break Well were rewarded for their play when Scott McDonald fired home from close range after Alex Burns had hit the post.

They were further rewarded with the last touch of the half with David Clarkson's header from a Jason Dair corner giving the visitors an unlikely lead.

Motherwell made a blistering start to the second half and could have extended their lead with efforts from Burns and Stephen Craigan cleared by Hearts.

They soon regretted these misses as Hearts were back on level terms on 66 minutes when Corr only half saved a Hartley effort and Wyness was on hand to drill the ball low into the unguarded net.

Four minutes later Well could have taken the lead once again when Clarkson robbed Scott Severin just outside the box, but Craig Gordon reacted well to save diving to his right.

Hearts took the lead for the second time on 75 minutes when Kevin McKenna headed a Hartley corner into the ground and high into the roof of the net.

The visitors had other chances in the last 15 minutes with Burns blasting wide, Corrigan's header cleared off the line and Gordon saving from Kenny Wright in the last minute.

This was an excellent end of season game between two teams committed to attack and trying to entertain the sun-drenched crowd.
