Zaliukas set for Hearts milestone

The 26-year-old admits not knowing whether he was coming or going was difficult during his early days in Edinburgh.

But he is now well used to his future being up in the air each year and is happy to wait and see what happens when his latest loan extension expires at the end of 2010.

Zaliukas found his first two seasons at Tynecastle particularly difficult.

"For the first half, it was like this," he said.

"But now I'm confident."

Indeed, Zaliukas could not be more relaxed about where he might end up in 2011.

"I don't have any offers," said the Jambos vice-captain, who has always been a man of few words.

"I want to make my 100th appearance for Hearts."

And beyond that? "We will see."

Zaliukas will reach his landmark appearance tomorrow when Hearts travel to Rangers in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

"I didn't imagine it was 100 already but I'm looking forward to it," said the centre-half, who would love to mark the occasion in the grand manner.

"Celebrating with a goal, obviously, and then of course with victory as a team."

He added: "Every game with the Old Firm is a big game for us.

"Everyone wants to perform as well as possible."

Hearts' hopes of continuing their good recent SPL run have been boosted by Rangers' injury problems up front.

Star duo Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller are definitely out, along with Nacho Novo and Steven Naismith.

Zaliukas said: "We are unbeaten in six games and Rangers now have problems in the striker position.

"We have quiet confidence and will go there to win."

Yet, the Lithuanian warned the absence of Boyd and Miller will not necessarily worked in Hearts' favour.

"They are obviously the biggest threat was but now young boys will want to prove themselves," he said.

"Maybe it will be more hard."

Hearts have enjoyed a good record against the Old Firm since Csaba Laszlo took charge and Zaliukas admits the club seem to raise their game against Rangers and Celtic.

He said: "You could say so because I notice that all the time after an Old Firm game, we go to a lower team in the table and it's just as hard or even harder to play against them."

Zaliukas would have reached a century of Hearts appearances much sooner but for his appalling disciplinary record last season - four red cards - and an injury-hit start to the current campaign.

He looked in danger of being made to wait a little longer for game number 100 when he left Tynecastle on crutches after last weekend's win over St Mirren.

But the calf injury he suffered proved not to be serious and he will take his place at the heart of the Jambos defence tomorrow.

Zaliukas said of the injury: "I thought it was just a knock but the physio wanted to make sure.

"It's good it wasn't so bad."

Meanwhile, Hearts have met Darren Barr "for an initial chat" aimed at bringing him to Tynecastle, according to the Falkirk captain's agent, Kevin Drinkell.

Barr is out of contract in the summer and is also wanted by Hibernian, Aberdeen and Dundee.
