The first cut is the deepest

20100402-Hearts badgeWould you take a near 33% cut in salary to take on a new job? That is the scale of the commitment shown by Stephen Elliot as he has reduced his take home pay by around  £2,000 a week when he signed his two-year contract with Hearts. The economies of scale were tilted towards the club as Elliot moved on a free from Preston North End which allowed them to go within a whisker of the top end of their salary scale to secure his signature.

Elliott, 26, is said to have earned £6,500 a week in England but he decided the drop in wages was worth it to secure regular first-team football with Hearts. The move will also allow him to be in the international shop window with underlining hopes to add to his nine full caps for the Republic. JJ said: "
Stephen's a player I have known about for a while and is someone who has proven himself to be a goalscorer wherever he has played. He has an excellent pedigree and has played at the highest level with the Republic of Ireland. I am delighted to have brought him here as there was a lot of interest in him from down south."
