Hearts moved above St Johnstone into fifth in the Ladbrokes Premiership table as Kyle Lafferty’s goal sealed a 1-0 victory at McDiarmid Park.
With the top four not in league action because of the Betfred Cup semi-finals it was a chance for both St Johnstone and Hearts to close the gap on the leading group.
Hearts grabbed the opportunity as Lafferty sealed it with 74 minutes gone, his shot from inside the box deflected into the bottom corner of the goal.
Bottom side Partick came from behind to earn a valuable first win of the season 2-1 at home to Dundee, who had taken the lead after nine minutes when Kevin Holt’s cross was headed home by A-Jay Leitch-Smith.
The visitors could have extended their lead with 22 minutes on the clock when Leitch-Smith was fouled but the same player’s spot-kick was kept out by the foot of goalkeeper Tomas Cerny.
They were made to pay with 15 minutes to go as Ryan Edwards brought the bottom side level as he applied the finishing touch to score after the ball rebounded to him.
Partick completed the comeback as Miles Storey scored from a Kris Doolan pass in the second minute of added time but they remain bottom of the table on goal difference.
Thomas Mikkelsen netted the winner with four minutes to go as Ross County beat Hamilton 2-1 to end a run of six home games without victory.
The win was also manager Owen Coyle’s first victory in front of home fans but his players had to work hard to earn all three points.
Visitors Hamilton broke the deadlock after 52 minutes as Greg Docherty scored from a Steven Boyd corner on the left.
Substitute Alex Schalk drew Ross County level just four minutes after coming on. The Dutch striker scored the equaliser with 20 minutes remaining as he headed in a Jason Naismith cross.
Mikkelsen completed the comeback for the home side, who moved above Hamilton as a result of the win, as he scored from fellow substitute Schalk’s pass following a quick breakaway.
